Carvings and Sculptures

Our inventory of carvings and sculptures includes objects by artists both known and unknown. Smaller pieces such as canes and whimseys were often carved by anonymous whittlers for family and friends. Larger figurative pieces include cigar store Indians that were designed by artisans such as Robb or Cromwell, and carousel figures from the workshops of Denzel or Looff. In addition we offer bird carvings and decoys, images in wood and stone, whirligigs and iconic folk sculpture.

Decorative Arts

Americans created a wide range of small decorative objects to beautify their homes. Included here are boxes made for an assortment of purposes in different sizes, shapes and colors as well as hooked rugs and other textiles, treenware, paint decorated gameboards, decorative mirrors, sewing favors, tools, and parade firehats and buckets.

Fraktur

Pennsylvania German fraktur - illuminated folk art drawings - were executed in watercolor and ink and are found in a variety of forms: Vorschriften (writing samples), Taufscheine (birth and baptismal certificates), as well as marriage and house blessings, book plates, and floral and figurative scenes.

Native American

From time to time we offer Native American objects created by the Eastern Woodlands, Plains and Northwest Coast tribes. These include ceremonial ladles, burl bowls, totems, and rattles as well as occasional beadwork and textiles.

Oil Paintings

Our oil painting inventory includes works from three centuries of American art including portraits, landscapes, still-lifes, historical imagery and trade signs.

Redware and Stoneware

In addition to works by known potteries such as Norton, Remmey, Bell, and Bennington we offer a diverse collection of slip decorated redware, redware animals, colbalt decorated and salt glazed pottery, stoneware banks and presentation pieces from regional potteries. These include wares from Pennsylvania, New York State, New England redware from Maine and Massachusetts, the work of Southern potteries in Virginia and pieces from Ohio and the Midwest.

Watercolors
