Charles C. Hoffman
CHARLES C. HOFFMAN (1820-1882)
was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States at the age of 40. He appears to have lived a rather troubled life and first committed himself to the Berks County Almshouse in October of 1872. The admission registry notes Hoffman’s occupation as a painter and his difficulties with intemperance. Between 1865 and 1881 he painted a number of large landscape views of the almshouses in Berks, Montgomery and Schuylkill Counties in Pennsylvania. Shortly before his death he was once again admitted to the Berks County Almshouse and was later buried in the pauper’s field.
