A. L. Jewell & Co.
A. L. JEWELL & COMPANY (active 1852-1867)
was founded in Waltham, Massachusetts during a transitional period in the production of weathervanes. Unlike individual craftsmen’s shops, Jewell & Co. appealed to customers by offering a wide variety of styles at lower prices. The copper weathervanes feature stylized designs often of horses, cattle and eagles. Jewell was also one of the first manufacturers to produce “made to order” weathervanes. After Jewell and his partner suffered a fatal work-related accident in 1867, the business was taken over by the Cushing and White firm.
